"The Royal Canin Catcyclopedia"
Royal Canin/ANIWA Publishing, Paris, France, 2000
What a marvelous reference of all things feline! Despite the fact that we've lived with cats for as far back 4500 BC, they still maintain their covert ways. In the forward of "The Royal Canin Catcyclopedia," the authors say their goal is to reveal and explain cat secrets. They succeed.
To understand cats, it helps to understand what makes them tick. So, this book includes about 200 pages alone devoted to anatomy, physiology, food, nutrition, and diseases and treatment.
So much of what we think about cats - even misconceptions - are notions developed in the media and in advertising. An entire chapter is devoted to how cats have been depicted throughout history, mostly beloved, sometimes despised, sometimes based on fact, but mostly not. It seems dogs have always been our best friends, but not cats. This book includes stats on how cats were depicted on caves to how cats are now depicted in popular culture. For example, one reason why pure bred cats seem to be increasing in popularity must have something to do with how more pure bred cats are being used on TV and in the movies.
The photographs of the cats are awe inspiring, especially within the section on pure breds. There's lots of info on the breeds we know, like Persians and Siamese - but also breeds we don't see much of in America. Unusual breeds include the Ceylon (a compact short-haired cat originating in Sri Lanka) or the Norwegian forest cat (A thick-coated, powerful cat developed in Scandinavia).
